Questions and Answers about this skimmer

Q. Whats are the biggest differences/benefits of your design?

Q. How does this skimmer compare to other chopper impellar type skimmers like Euro Reef, ASM?

Q. What is the importance of decent Water flow in the chamber, and this “VORTEX” motion of the water and bubbles anyway?

Q. How does the Vortex motion increase efficiency?

A. This skimmer is comperable to the Larger High end skimmers like Euro Reef CS6/ RS6 in performance and capacity, BUT at half the price! Like the ER ES-5, ours is built with Extruded Acrylic tubing, but larger at 6” OD tubing. Because ours uses water flow to create our bubbles, we have to use a larger pump at 977gph vs the smaller ones that chopper skimmers use. But there is an upside that outweighs the need for a larger pump. please read on.....

A. Unlike chopper skimmers (use needle wheel in place of normal impeller, that can clogg and wear out, get out of balance when dirty), this skimmer is a Venturi Type, which means fewer moving parts to wear out and replace. Ours produces bubbles with a typical impeller by pulling in air to the skimmer through simple water movement.. Also the Venturi type is more plankton friendly since, chopper skimmers tend tear up minute life that meets that impeller... It chopps water and creates bubbles nicely, but it also chopps up plankton/pods and other marine life which is vital for your tanks health.. Venturi allows for  better flow in the chamber due to the use of the real impeller on the pump, which allows for opposing heads on the intakes of the skimmer = VORTEX motion =better exposure time in the chamber. Which is the critical function of any skimmer.

A. Because they use the needle wheel /chopper impeller, they have reduced the pumps ability to MOVE water.. It chopps it nicely, but cannot swirl the water in the chamber since there is nothing to push the water around against the back pressure of the chamber. The bubbles they create just enter in the chamber and simply rise.

A. As we stated above, the Vortex motion in our chamber not only creates greater exposure time in the chamber, it also allows for a shorter design of the chamber at only 12” H, because the water travels so far before rising, that it’s as if the water was travelling up a 20ft reaction chamber! Having a power plant like this at only 20” comes in handy when most users have only have about 13” diagonally in the skimmer sections and only 25-33” clearance under the tank to work with as well.

Q.How come needle wheel skimmers can’t produce a VORTEX in their chambers for increased exposure time, like yours?

A. Since exposure time (time bubbles surfaces have to get charged in the reaction chamber) is one of if not the most critical factors when skimming pollutants/protiens from water, the goal should be to increase exposure time in the smallest most effecient way...

FACT: The shortest distance between two points, is a straight line... correct? If this is true, then which set of bubbles would arrive to the destination quicker? Bubbles that enter a cylinder and rise straight up?  OR bubbles moving around and around in a VORTEX circular motion BEFORE rising?

I think you see our point.

In all the extensive research we have done, we have also found that it’s not just the production of BUBBLES in a chamber that is important, but rather as AquaC clearly states in their patent documents. (available online) a VARIETY of bubble sizes and the COLLISION of the same bubbles is very important for charging the surfaces of the bubbles to cause pollutants to cling to them (how fractionation works).  The Poseidon2 Vortex allows for this collision by creating TURBULENCE in the chamber along with the VORTEX motion since the water is entering at a rapid powerful rate caused by the the pumps impeller.
